Summary

“Precise and wryly hilarious。。。Gauld's both a literature nerd and a science-fiction nerd whose deadpan mashups belong on the same shelf as R。 Sikoryak, Michael Kupperman, and Kate Beaton。”—NPR, Best Books of 2013

A new collection from the Guardian and New York Times Magazine cartoonist

The New York Times Magazine cartoonist Tom Gauld follows up his widely praised graphic novel Goliath with You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack, a collection of cartoons made for The Guardian。 Over the past eight years, Gauld has produced a weekly cartoon for the Saturday Review section of Britain’s best-regarded newspaper。 Only a handful of comics from this huge and hilarious body of work have ever been printed in North America—and these have been available exclusively within the pages of the prestigious Believer magazine。
Youre All Just Jealous of My Jetpack distills perfectly Gauld’s dark humor, impeccable timing, and distinctive style。 Arrests by the fiction police and imaginary towns designed by Tom Waits intermingle hilariously with piercing observations about human behavior and whimsical imaginings of the future。 Again and again, Gauld reaffirms his position as a first-rank cartoonist, creating work infused with a deep understanding of both literary and cartoon history。

More miss than hit for me but some clever comics in this volume, mostly focused on literary jokes which do require some level of knowledge of the authors/genres but it all works pretty well but maybe just not for me。

This is my 4th Tom Gauld book and I still want more。 The comics are so funny and clever。 A lot of literary references and creative humor。A quote from one of my favorites:"Cut this out and carry it with you at all times。In the event of my death I would like to be memorialized with (tick one box):-Small plaque-Heroic statue-Spooky tree-Colossal Ziggurat-Haunted fruit machine-Network of secret tunnels"I would choose the secret tunnels, except they would have to be under the library :) This is my 4th Tom Gauld book and I still want more。 The comics are so funny and clever。 A lot of literary references and creative humor。A quote from one of my favorites:"Cut this out and carry it with you at all times。In the event of my death I would like to be memorialized with (tick one box):-Small plaque-Heroic statue-Spooky tree-Colossal Ziggurat-Haunted fruit machine-Network of secret tunnels"I would choose the secret tunnels, except they would have to be under the library :) 。。。more

I liked the collection of his works that I read previously better。

Me gustaron algunas cosas, pero en general no es mi tipo de humor。 Me aburren las enumeraciones y esta colección está plagada de ese recurso。

This was a fun, lighthearted graphic novel type book。 But, I felt it was a bit too drawn out。 None of the goofy silly parodies are connected。 It's like reading a super, super short story on each page。 A lot of super, super short stories。 This was a fun, lighthearted graphic novel type book。 But, I felt it was a bit too drawn out。 None of the goofy silly parodies are connected。 It's like reading a super, super short story on each page。 A lot of super, super short stories。 。。。more

A short story-Will you publish my short stories?-No。 The EndTrust me, it is a lot funnier with the comic strip。 A series of three-panels jokes, published in the Guardian。 You need to have some sort of literary knowledge to appreciate some of them。 Runs the gamut from quirky, to funny to hilarious with a few misses along the way。 A fine way to spend an hour if you ask me。。。

(TL;DR: I enjoyed this and may re-read it)I actually enjoyed this, even though I didn't initially understand a lot of the literary references in most of the strips featured in this collection。 I may very well re-read this and read the other 2 collections Tom had published so far as of this review, and while I'm at it, have my phone with me to look up references and words I don't understand。The comic strips featured in this collection may feel slightly out of date, but I was able to keep in mind (TL;DR: I enjoyed this and may re-read it)I actually enjoyed this, even though I didn't initially understand a lot of the literary references in most of the strips featured in this collection。 I may very well re-read this and read the other 2 collections Tom had published so far as of this review, and while I'm at it, have my phone with me to look up references and words I don't understand。The comic strips featured in this collection may feel slightly out of date, but I was able to keep in mind that this was published in the early 2010s。I not only like his art style, but also that his IQ seems to be higher and his vocabulary is stronger than mine。 I do also like that he has his books sized to perfectly complement the fixed size he uses for all of his comic strips。(Disclaimer: I have Asperger's, on the high-functioning spectrum) 。。。more

I expected to really really love this, because I generally enjoy Tom Gauld's humour and style, and most of the Snooty Bookshop postcard collection are great (if niche, and thus sometimes difficult to place with appropriate recipients on Postcrossing)。。。 but actually, I found that it all got a bit samey after a while, and some of them just weren't that funny or worth noting。I'm still glad I got it, because there are some great ones, including the one that gives the collection its title。 But at th I expected to really really love this, because I generally enjoy Tom Gauld's humour and style, and most of the Snooty Bookshop postcard collection are great (if niche, and thus sometimes difficult to place with appropriate recipients on Postcrossing)。。。 but actually, I found that it all got a bit samey after a while, and some of them just weren't that funny or worth noting。I'm still glad I got it, because there are some great ones, including the one that gives the collection its title。 But at the same time, I probably wouldn't recommend it。。。 you can follow Tom Gauld on Twitter to see many of his cartoons there, and that's usually more fun -- you get to see them one at a time, as they come out, and then the less amusing ones fare better because you're not reading a whole book of them。It's also a matter of taste, of course, and maybe it's best read a little bit at a time anyway! 。。。more

Más irregular que El departamento de teorías alucinantes, algunas viñetas muy buenas y otras no tanto。 En general me ha gustado más el otro。

There were a few chuckles to be had from this collection of strips originally published in the Guardian, but some of them felt a bit dated or irrelevant, or even perplexing。 I definitely had to Google a few names to figure out what some of the strips were about, which is fine, I guess, but shows me that some of them are trying a bit too hard or a bit too obscure to be fun for a general audience。

This is a collection of cartoons by Tom Gauld, taken from his work in the Guardian。 If you've not seen his work, may I recommend having a look at https://www。theguardian。com/profile/tom-gauld The majority of his work leans towards the literary, indeed, the title comes from a single panel strip of literary fiction looking down on Science Fiction, and I think we all know who he's talking about there。 We get the further adventures of Mr Dickens, the missing Quadrophenia scenes, Rhett Butlers remot This is a collection of cartoons by Tom Gauld, taken from his work in the Guardian。 If you've not seen his work, may I recommend having a look at https://www。theguardian。com/profile/tom-gauld The majority of his work leans towards the literary, indeed, the title comes from a single panel strip of literary fiction looking down on Science Fiction, and I think we all know who he's talking about there。 We get the further adventures of Mr Dickens, the missing Quadrophenia scenes, Rhett Butlers remote control, but alongside this, is a surreal architect, science and religion meeting, chess boards explained, and even a cut out and keep guide to how you wish to be remembered。 There are times it is a little hit and miss, but to be fair the hits far outweigh the misses, and the hits tend to be bullseyes 。。。more

A collection of fun, clever, and occasionally sad one-page comics that pull from literature and science。 PS。 Every time I read this title, I get RuPaul’s “Jealous of My Boogie” in my head。

Tom Gauld is a British cartoonist whose work can be found in The Guardian and the New York Times。 This collection was first published in 2013 and focuses a lot on odd takes on novels, writers and other literary concerns。 If I had to describe these cartoons, I would probably say they remind me of the work of Edward Gorey, both in style and in the type of absurdist humour; one’s enjoyment of the book will depend on one’s tolerance for that kind of cartoon。 This was a birthday gift for my husband, Tom Gauld is a British cartoonist whose work can be found in The Guardian and the New York Times。 This collection was first published in 2013 and focuses a lot on odd takes on novels, writers and other literary concerns。 If I had to describe these cartoons, I would probably say they remind me of the work of Edward Gorey, both in style and in the type of absurdist humour; one’s enjoyment of the book will depend on one’s tolerance for that kind of cartoon。 This was a birthday gift for my husband, and it took him from May to July to read it because he loved it so much that he only let himself read one or two pages at a time; that strikes me as a good recommendation! 。。。more

Tom Gauld is a cartooning treasure。 His comics for The Guardian, collected here, are short and sweet but full of sharp wit that pokes fun at mankind’s hubris within fine art, literature, and science。 His art is reminiscent of the geometrically simple abstractions of Chris Ware, with a dash of Edward Gorey’s Gothic texture on top。 Not everything in this first book of his lands on both feet, but the many strips that do more than make up for the few that don’t。 If your bookshelf has Zach Weinersmit Tom Gauld is a cartooning treasure。 His comics for The Guardian, collected here, are short and sweet but full of sharp wit that pokes fun at mankind’s hubris within fine art, literature, and science。 His art is reminiscent of the geometrically simple abstractions of Chris Ware, with a dash of Edward Gorey’s Gothic texture on top。 Not everything in this first book of his lands on both feet, but the many strips that do more than make up for the few that don’t。 If your bookshelf has Zach Weinersmith and Kate Beaton on it, it absolutely needs Tom Gauld (and vice versa)! 。。。more

This is a collection of one panel funnies collected together。 Some of them are very humorous and some miss。 He makes some great writing jokes in here。 It’s easy and fast to read and you certainly wont read it for the art。I was amused。 I had to get this ILL。

Shim

Amusing enough。 Read together you kind of get tired of the repetitiveness。 A couple funny ones though。
